Can Music Affect Our Intelligence?

There is a belief floating around that listening to classical music makes children or babies smarter. The truth is that while there were multiple tests carried out to prove this none have proven that classical music makes any child smarter.

intelligence Can Music Affect Our Intelligence?

can music improve intelligence

Classical music is very relaxing and soothing but in itself will not turn anybody into a genius although I am willing to accept that there may be brain functions that may be improved listening not to classical music but music of varying layers. The reason I believe that some kind of music may be beneficial to the brain is that it causes the listener to figure out the varying layers in the music and interpret it in their own way. This means they brain is exercising even while you relax.

The example proponents of “classical music makes you more intelligent” usually use the experiment carried out by Francis Rauscher as their example but what they forget to mention is that although those who had listened to Mozart had increased IQ by 7-8 points this increase only lasted for 15 minutes. While this means there might be something to the increase it also means that there may be something to listening to classical music consistently and for the long-term. I would personally recommend that anyone should expose their children to classical music for potential benefits such as creating a relaxing environment as well as while they read and study as there may be something to it improving intelligence.

You can also try it for yourself. Try working with classical music or other relaxing genres with multiple layers such as jazz while you work. While the effect (if there is any) may not be as pronounced in an adult it may still do you wonders since it will improve short term intelligence if Francis Rauscher’s experiments are anything to go by.

For now we have to accept that there is no scientific proof that music can improve intelligence as no replicated experiment has been able to prove it. However, it is worth keeping in mind that the power of music may reach far beyond it’s ability to relax us and to use it to our advantage whenever possible.

Music Therapy Can Help Fight Depression

Music therapy can help improve the treatment of depression, at least in the short term, say researchers in Finland.

The technique uses non-verbal communication allowing patients to express their emotions.

A study involving 79 people, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, showed that there was a greater improvement in patients receiving therapy with music those who participated in standard therapy.

Experts have said music may engage people in ways that words cannot.

Music therapy is used, including by the NHS, to help children who struggle to communicate. Playing instruments and singing with a trained music therapist is supposed to help children express themselves. music therapy 273x300 Music Therapy Can Help Fight Depression

Initial improvement

In this study, all patients, who suffered with depression received the standard practice of counselling and appropriate medication. Thirty three of them were also given 20 sessions with a trained music therapist.

After three months, patients receiving music therapy generaly showed a greater positive improvement in scores of anxiety and depression than the other set of patients.

However, it must be said, there was no statistical improvement after six months.

Professor Christian Gold, from the University of Jyväskylä, said: “Our trial has shown that music therapy, when added to standard care helps people to improve their levels of depression and anxiety.”

“Music therapy has specific qualities that allow people to express themselves and interact in a non-verbal way – even in situations when they cannot find the words to describe their inner experiences.

Dr Mike Crawford, who specialises in mental health services at Imperial College London, said in a journal editorial: “The results suggest that it can improve the mood and general functioning of people with depression.

“Music-making is social, pleasurable and meaningful. It has been argued that music making engages people in ways that words may simply not be able to.”

The Therapeatic Power Of Music

music therapy 300x212 The Therapeatic Power Of Music

Most culture have always used music as a form of therapy. Western culture just seem to be beginning to appreciate and study exactly what effects they can have especially in the stressful conditions most of us choose to endure. Even modern day songs can be therapeutic, whether it is because of the inspirational lyrics or smooth soothing sounds which trigger stress free or relaxing experiences and memories.

Reduce stress – improve your life

Test have shown biological proof of the power of music. Research has shown that when people listen to music which they enjoy, it can have a profound effects by dropping your heart rate and your blood pressure. While this may true, easy listening and relaxing music may be more beneficial. Research has even indicated that easy listening instrumental music may actually be beneficial to your health because anti-body production increased in the immune system of those who listen to just 30 minutes of easy listening instrumental music.

If you enjoy physical activities, especially repetitive or solo activities such as jogging or working out (such as pilates) you may personally listen to music or notice others listening to music. You may not realise why but music can make a person more motivated but it can also be a ‘distraction’ from pain. A group of 60 participant (chosen from clinics suffering from chronic pain) were put into three equal groups. The first group listened to any popular music of their choice. The second listened to relaxing music chosen by the researchers. The third group were the control who did not listen to music. The study found both groups which listened to music in general reported significantly less pain, less depressive feelings and greater mobility.

Even in the medical profession German medical doctors found that when music was played to patients going through a gastrocopy, (a procedure where a probe is taken down the throat into the stomach) showed less sign of uncomfortably and also produced less stress hormones if the were listening to calm, soothing music.

Advise on listening choices to reduce stress

Take this section with a pinch of salt. (adjust to your own preference and situation).
It must also be pointed out that music that you enjoy and are familiar with happen to be the most relaxing for most people. Your mood and situation should be an indication of what type of music you should listen to. After a long day of work try classical music or contemporary jazz with a tempo of around 72 bpm (beats per minutes) or less.  It is also advice to avoid music with abrupt changes in tempo or melody. Also playing music at very low volume can cause you to strain to hear and actually make listening to music stressful.

While you should not feel the need to change you taste or preference in music, have an open mind and try to open up yourself to the therapeutic power music can have on your life.
